Crooms Named To All-BIG EAST Preseason Team, PC Women’s Basketball Eighth In Poll

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Providence College senior guard Janai Crooms (Cranston, R.I.) was among the 11 student-athletes named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team for women’s basketball at the league’s annual media day on Tuesday, Oct. 18, held at Madison Square Garden.

Crooms, a senior guard playing in her second season with the Friars, averaged a team-best 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game during the 2021-22 campaign. She also contributed 1.1 blocked shots and 1.4 steals per contest. Crooms reached double figures in the scoring column in 24 of the 29 games she played and registered a team-best six double-doubles. The Rhode Island-native recorded 20-or-more points in three games, including a career-best 27 points against Connecticut on Jan. 30. She converted 8-11 shot attempts against the Huskies, including 3-4 from beyond the arc and hit 8-10 free throws. She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on three occasions and was named All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention.

During her career, which includes stops at Ohio State and Michigan State, Crooms has amassed 986 points, 504 rebounds, 338 assists, 124 steals and 94 blocked shots. Crooms is on pace to become the 37th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point milestone, needing just 14 points to achieve the feat. Crooms enters the 2022-23 slate tied for 11th on the Friars’ all-time career assist list (338).

Connecticut earned the top spot in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll, having earned 10 first-place votes and a total of 100 points. Creighton (89 points) and Villanova (83 points) round out the league’s top-three spots, while Providence was selected to finish eighth (34 points).

The Friars will host Southern New Hampshire in an exhibition game on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars officially open the 2022-23 campaign on Monday, Nov. 7 against Dayton. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
