Cumberland double-fatal accident result of hit-and-run, police say

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — The Cumberland Police Department said one of the cars involved in a double fatal accident was also involved in a hit-and -run just moments before.

The crash happened on Monday around 1 p.m. in the area of Pine Swamp and Diamond Hill Road.

Police said one of the cars was involved in a hit-and-run in the area of Wrentham Road right before the fatal accident.

“That vehicle then flees that scene, does not stop, it was an attended vehicle they struck, took off from there, and then the collision ensues, seconds later,” Police Chief Matthew Benson said.

They determined one person from each vehicle died. They are identifying one of the victims as 25-year-old Sara Laboissonniere.

Responders said the suspected vehicle in the crash was not the vehicle driven driven by Laboissonniere.

Although the chief said they aren’t able to officially confirm yet, he believes speeding might have played a big part in what happened.

“With a collision like this, and the amount of damage, and resulting injury, we’re working on some sort of information that that was part of this,” Benson said.

The other victim was identified as a woman but further identification is pending through the medical examiner’s office.

“My goal for this whole thing is to make sure that the family, for whatever semblance of life comes after this, that we support them as best as we can, and to provide them answers and just some sort of closure,” Benson continued.

They hope to have an identity confirmation on the second driver by Wednesday.
