CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — Faculty from Cumberland High School are remembering a former basketball coach after a tragic accident claimed her life.
On Monday night, Cumberland police said a 60-year-old woman, now identified as Deb Engels, had died as a result of an accident involving a fire pit.
No further information was immediately released on the incident.
On Wednesday, Dr. Phillip Thornton of the Cumberland School Department issued a statement addressing Engels’ untimely passing.

“As a former coach of the CHS Girls Basketball Team, Deb’s enthusiasm and eagerness to coach was an inspiration to all,” he continued.
“Our Athletic Director, Martin Crowley speaks very highly of her not only as a coach, but as a great role model for everyone,” Thornton concluded.
