Custodian falls through Smithfield High skylight while clearing snow

By Alana Cerrone

Smithfield school officials say a female custodian fell through a skylight on the roof of Smithfield High School Wednesday.

Superintendent of Schools Robert O’Brien says a group of custodians were walking on the roof around 8:15 am working to shovel snow off of the drains when the woman fell 12 feet through a skylight into a classroom below.

The custodian, 56-year-old Joyce Ducharme, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital but her condition is not considered life-threatening, according to Mr. O’Brien.

He also says there is a structural engineer inspecting all of the roofs in the district.
