BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) – Red Sox legend David Ortiz continues to recover Wednesday after being shot in the abdomen Sunday in the Dominican Republic.

The chief prosecutor in the Dominican Republic says five people, including the alleged gunman, have been detained in the shooting of former Red Sox star David Ortiz.

Authorities say a fifth suspect is being pursued in the shooting, which witnesses say was carried out by two men on a motorcycle and two other groups of people in cars.

The Dominican Republic’s chief prosecutor Jean Alain Rodriguez Sanchez spoke at a news conference on Wednesday.

Authorities gave the name of the alleged shooter as Rolfy Ferrery, aka Sandy.

Prosecutors have said the two men were seen on security camera footage talking with other people in the Accent and in a Hyundai in a nearby street before the shooting at a popular Santo Domingo bar Sunday night.

“Our focus right now is on his health and well being,” said Red Sox President Sam Kennedy.

One man, 25-year-old Eddy Garcia, was arrested near the scene after witnesses caught and beat him.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox and their fans took the time before their Monday night game against the Texas Rangers to send well wishes to “Big Papi”.

Even some of Ortiz’s biggest rivals took a moment to wish the former slugger nothing but the best.

“This is a guy that’s beloved throughout the sport and throughout sports and general,” said former New York Yankees Captain Derek Jeter. “We just wish him a speedy recovery.”

Ortiz’s wife Tiffany issued a statement on behalf of the family, saying that Ortiz is awake and comfortable in the ICU following a second surgery.

“I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and love that we have received during this incredibly difficult time,” she said. “We ask for privacy as David works towards recovery.”

Dominican National Police say they have detained several other people in connection to the shooting, but have not positively identified any of them as the second suspect.
