Day of Remembrance for 2 Area Service Members, Killed in Action
Saturday marked a day of remembrance for two local service members, killed in Iraq while serving their country.
In Coventry, a 5k run/walk was held to honor Holly Charette, who was the first female service member killed in operation Iraqi Freedom. Charette joined the Marines after 9/11, and was stationed in Falujuah as a mail clerk.
In June of 2005, Charette lost her life when her convoy was struck by a suicide bomber.
The 2nd annual Holly Charette Walk/Run was held at Coventry High School, as a way to keep Holly's memory alive.
Also, in Taunton, a local soldier was remembered with a bridge dedication ceremony.
22-yea-old Army Sgt. Shane Duffy was killed in June of 2008 while in Tikrit, Iraq. Army Sgt. Duffy was killed when his unit was attacked by enemy forces.
The bridge on Winthrop St. in Taunton, will now bear his name.
