Defending America East Champion Vermont Takes Down Bryant

Earl Timberlake and Antwan Walker each posted a double-double but the Bryant University men’s basketball team was unable to contain the University of Vermont, falling 74-64, on Thursday night at Patrick Gymnasium.

Thursday’s tilt on ESPNU featured the top two teams in the America East preseason poll. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Timberlake collected his fifth double-double of the season with 17 points (5-of-7 FG, 8-9 FT) and 13 rebounds, while Walker posted his fourth with 13 and 12. Sherif Gross-Bullock finished with 13 points, while Charles Pride posted 11 points and eight rebounds. The Bulldogs finished just 4-of-20 from beyond the arc and turned the ball over 22 times on the evening.

Back-to-back threes for Vermont answered a Bryant run and gave the Catamounts a 15-point lead halfway through the second half.
How it Happened

Vermont jumped out of the gates with the first seven points and led 9-2 at the first media timeout.
The Bulldogs were able to battle back, making it 13-11 on a Chauncey Hawkins IV basket in transition.
UVM, however, rattled off seven quick points to build a 20-13 lead. Following two technical free throws, the Catmounts would lead 24-13 at the 10 minute mark of the first half.
The Catamounts would push their 15, 33-18, with 3:25 left before baskets from Miles Latimer and Gross-Bullock made it an 11-point deficit at the break.
Bryant was able to pull within eight on a pair of occasions early in the second half but a trio of threes from UVM’s Aaron Deloney kept the Catamounts ahead.
Threes from Deloney and TJ Hurley gave the Catamounts a 50-35 lead with 11:58 to play.
Bryant was finally able to cut the deficit to nine on a putback slam from Walker with 4:14 to go. A double technical was called, however, on Gross-Bullock after the play. UVM would make two of the four technical free throws to push the lead back to 11.
Bryant made a late push, pulling within six on a Brelsford three with 50.9 seconds remaining to make it 68-62.
The Catamounts closed the game out from the free throw line to win the first of two meetings between the teams this season.

Bryant finished the game 22-of-48 (45.8 percent) from the field, 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) from three and 16-of-23 (69.6 percent) from the line.
Bryant held a decided 44-23 edge on the glass.
The Bulldogs turned the ball over 22 times, while UVM coughed it up just five times.
Gross-Bullock finished the game with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Timberlake posted 17 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double.
Walker posted 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting. He added 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the year.
Pride posted 11 points and eight boards.

Bryant and Vermont were meeting for the third time in program history and the first time as America East foes.
Vermont now leads the series, 2-1.
