Dem RI Atty General Candidate Fernandez Dies at 46

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Former Providence city solicitor Joe Fernandez, who ran unsuccessfully for Rhode Island attorney general this year, has died at age 46.

Fernandez's campaign manager Dan Herkert says Fernandez died at The Miriam Hospital on Saturday after a short illness.

The Democrat was appointed city solicitor in 2003 by Mayor David Cicilline and left last year to run for office.

Fernandez lost to state Rep. Peter Kilmartin in September in a three-way Democratic primary in the attorney general's race. Kilmartin went on to win the November general election to replace
Attorney General Patrick Lynch.

Fernandez is a Brown University alumnus and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1991.

He is survived by a wife and two children.
