JAMESTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) – Two people died Sunday in an apparent drowning accident Sunday morning.

The DEM said a woman and a man, believed to be a married couple, were recovered from the high surf at Fort Wetherill State Park around 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Officials said they believe waves crashing over the rocks where the couple was standing pushed the woman into the water, and the man then jumped in to save her.

Both victims were pronounced dead at Newport Hospital after being recovered by a US Coast Guard Response team.

DEM officials urged the public to use extreme when standing close to the shoreline, especially in the wake of storms like Saturday’s Nor’easter.

The victims have not been identified at this time pending notification of family members.
