Dozens Arrested in Child Porn Roundup

The largest child porn sweep in Massachusetts history nets dozens of men.

Seven were arrested in our area for downloading, possession  and distributing child porn. Police decided to focus on child porn a few months, because nowadays all you need is a smart phone to download, watch, and even send child porn. And that's why officers said even with these arrests, they have a lot more work to do.

32 men in Massachusetts were arrested for looking at and distributing child porn. Three of them were from New Bedford. Others were from Taunton, Somerset, North Attleboro, and Seekonk.

“Peer to peer technology that was once best used for sharing music files is now being used to distribute images depicting rape and abuse of children,” said Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Christina Miller.

Some of those children in the videos seized by police are infants and toddlers. Officers said there were thousands of children in the videos these men were watching, which they told us were tough to watch even for them.

“Looking at some of the most despicable and horrible images you can ever see,” said Massachusetts State Police Colonel Marian McGovern.

She said officers from dozens of police departments across the area scoured the web for the past couple months searching for predators. The result was 32 arrests in Massachusetts, some of them professionals, at least one of them a maintenance worker. Officers said, at this point, they don't think any of them are teachers.

“It could be anyone,” said Trooper Daniel Giossi, “It could be your neighbor. That's why it's important to know what your children are doing, if they're in contact with other people.”

Because Bristol County State Trooper Daniel Giossi said there's more than a hundred social networking sites these guys can get on and talk to your kids.

32 arrests in such a short amount of time is a big step, but police said the unfortunate thing here is some of the men sending this child porn around our communities could get sentenced to as little as two years probation.
