CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – Traffic will be shifting on the Park Avenue Eastbound Bridge starting March 11th as the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) continues to reconstruct the bridge.

The department of transportation said traffic will only affect eastbound traffic. The bridge carries about 18,000 motorists each day.

Turn-by-turn directions for Route 12 East are as followed:

  • Turn left onto Dyer Avenue
  • Turn right onto Cranston Street
  • Turn right onto Gansett Avenue
  • Follow Gansett Avenue to return to Route 12

According to RIDOT, the shift in traffic was originally intended to be complete by summer 2021, but crews are working to complete construction by the end of this year.

The bridge was built in 1960, but has been classified by the department of transportation as structurally deficient.

Crews plan to install temporary barriers along the curb line in both directions, replace the bridge’s deck and supporting beams. The road at the bridge and sidewalks will be paved and replaced.

The bridge reconstruction project is part of the state’s RhodeWorks program, and should be reopened by the end of the year.
