Driver arrested after fleeing the scene of fatal crash

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A Providence man was arrested on DUI charges after authorities say he fled the scene of a fatal crash early Saturday morning.

State Police said that around 3:10 a.m. Saturday, a vehicle traveling north on Route 95 at a high speed struck the median near Branch Avenue.

According to State Police, Jason Irizarry, 35, of Cranston, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Irizarry was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Anthony Correa, 31, of Providence, fled the scene of the crash and was arrested shortly afterward on Abbott Street.

Correa faces the following charges:

  • Driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and/or drugs, death resulting
  • Refusal to submit to a chemical test
  • Duty to stop – accident resulting in death
  • Obstructing a police officer in of execution of duty
  • Driving with a suspended/revoked/canceled license – third offense

State Police said Correa was also wanted on three separate warrants for felony charges from Warwick and North Providence Police Departments.

Correa will be held at the ACI pending further court action.

The crash is under investigation.
