Driver facing charges following single car collision in Smithfield Saturday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE)The 18-year-old driver of a vehicle found overturned in Smithfield early Saturday morning has been charged with driving under the influence– serious bodily harm resulting, and reckless driving, police said in a statement today.

Smithfield police responded to the call just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday, finding four teenage occupants outside of the overturned vehicle on Mountaindale Road.

One occupant, a 17-year-old female, was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital with serious injuries. Two other occupants, both 16-year-old males, were not injured, police said.

Following an investigation, police arrested the driver, 18-year-old Haleigh M. Ferreira, who is the sole person facing charges in the incident at this time. Ferreira was arraigned at the Smithfield Police Department and released on $10,000 personal recognizance.

The incident remains under investigation, and police have asked anyone with information, including on events leading up to the collision, to come forward.
