Driver hits state police cruiser, arrested for alleged DUI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- A Rhode Island State Police Cruiser was struck twice on I-95 North early on Sunday morning.

Captain Ernest McKenney tells ABC6 that the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near the 146 split in downtown Providence.

The trooper was providing backup to another state trooper who was handling a separate accident.

The cruiser of the trooper providing backup was hit from behind, with the impact pushing the vehicle forward 50-75 ft. After the initial hit, the driver tried to take off, hitting the cruiser a second time on the driver’s side.

The driver has been identified as 36-year-old Maksim Gorbachev of Pawtucket.

Gorbachev is facing the following charges:

  • Driving under the influence, first offense
  • Driving to endanger resulting in physical injury
  • Leaving the scene of an accident with an attended vehicle and chemical test refusal

Gorbachev was held overnight at the State Police Lincoln Woods Barracks and released Sunday morning.

The trooper was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and released Sunday morning.
