Teen charged with DUI in crash that killed Chariho senior

State Police have charged a teen in a crash that claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl in Exeter.
According to police, three men and one woman were traveling south on Route 2 Thursday around 10 p.m. when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car then hit a telephone pole and rolled over several times before coming to a stop.
Rescue crews transported all four occupants to Rhode Island Hospital. The front seat passenger, 17-year-old Heidi Malstrom, of Coventry, she sustained fatal injuries and was later pronounced dead. She was a senior at Chariho High School.
One of the rear passengers, Daniel Duffy, 22, of North Kingstown, was ejected from the vehicle and is presently listed in critical condition. The second rear passenger, Cameron Millar, 20, of West Kingstown, has sustained serious non-life threatening injuries.
The operator of the Nissan, 18-year-old Scott Gavitt, of Exeter, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. Police say Gavitt displayed signs of impairment on scene and upon arrival at Rhode Island Hospital consented to a blood examination. Test results are currently pending.
Gavitt is charged with driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, resulting in death, two counts of driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, resulting in serious bodily injury, one count of driving so as to endanger, resulting in death, and two counts of driving so as to endanger, resulting in serious bodily injury.
Gavitt was arraigned at Rhode Island Hospital and held on $100,000.00 surety bail. He is scheduled for a pre-arraignment conference on April 29th.
