East Providence plant being cited after explosion

By Alana Cerrone

After an explosion last August, an East Providence wood pellet plant is being cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

On August 20, a worker was injured and the Inferno Wood Pellet building on Ferris Ave. was completely demolished after wood dust ignited and caused an explosion and fire.

An investigation found that found that employees at the plant were exposed to wood dust explosions, deflagrations, or rapid combustion, and other fire hazards, and that there were not adequate protective measures in place.

Because of the hazards found during the investigation, OSHA cited Inferno Wood Pellet Inc. with 11 serious violations of workplace safety standards and has proposed $43,400 in fines.

Inferno has 15 business days to comply, meet with OSHA's area director, or contest the findings before the a review commission.
