EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — An East Providence man faced a judge in Providence District Court Monday morning after being accused of brutally killing his girlfriend.

31-year-old Allen J. Hanson initially told police on Saturday that his girlfriend, 41-year-old Jennifer Silva, was hit by a car. However, detectives were quick to figure out that was not the case.

Detectives working the case say Hanson changed his story several times in regards to the alleged hit-and-run, but police were able to determine that a violent domestic dispute had happened between Hanson and Silva sometime early Saturday morning.

Silva was transported to Rhode Island Hospital from the scene but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Hanson was arrested shortly after and charged with her death. A large group of friends and family of Silva appeared in court Monday, and according to police, they were devastated but hopeful for some justice in the case.

“By all means, everything we’ve talked with people, the victim, Jennifer Silva, was a wonderful, wonderful girl. The family is very devastated by this, and they want people to be held accountable for what happened to her,” said Lt. Raymond Blinn of the East Providence Police Department.

Family and friends remember Silva as a kind soul. A memorial has been growing outside her Warren Street apartment.

Hanson was ordered held without bail. If convicted, Hanson would be sentenced to life in prison.
