East Providence release details on hammer attack

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The East Providence Police Department have released details on a man who was assaulted with a hammer in the parking lot of a Shaw’s Supermarket.
Kenneth Jackson was taken into custody near Willett Avenue and charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon, assault with intent to commit attempted murder, and disorderly conduct.
Police responded to the area after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a man with a hammer. They observed a 74-year-old East Providence man suffering from serious injuries to his head.
Officers said that witnesses told them a man with a hammer attacked the victim, while some attempted to wrestle the hammer away.
Police picked up 47-year-old Jackson a short distance away and took him into custody.
The victim is still being treated at Rhode Island Hospital. Police said he was unknown to Jackson.
The incident is still under investigation. Jackson was arraigned Thursday morning is being held pending a mental health evaluation and competency hearing later this month.
