East Providence Will Fine for Un-shoveled Sidewalks
If you live in East Providence or own a business there and have a sidewalk out front, better not wait to shovel it.
According to a press release, East Providence has enacted a new ordinance which requires residents and businesses to shovel the sidewalk in front of their property within 24 hours following a storm, or face a fine.
City officials said in their press release that East Providence businesses and residents who don't shovel the sidewalk will face a fine of $25 for a first offense, $50 for a second offense, and $100 for a third or subsequent offenses.
East Providence Police say the ordinance generated controversy last year after questions arose over how it would be enforced, and who would be subject to the ordinance.
According to Lt. Fournier of East Providence Police, he is unsure how the ordinance will be enforced this year.
