PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo’s nominee for education commissioner says she wants to focus on existing policies rather than implement drastic changes.

Angelica Infante-Green said Tuesday the state already has high standards and a quality assessment, and she doesn’t see a need for an overhaul.

She also said she wasn’t satisfied with the state’s performance on the Comprehensive Assessment System exam, and she intends to be “very hands on.”

Raimondo nominated Infante-Green to serve as the next commissioner of elementary and secondary education after Ken Wagner leaves in April.

Infante-Green is the deputy commissioner of the New York State Education Department’s Office of Instructional Support.

The selection is subject to the approval of the state Board of Education.
