Elderly Fall River Man Attacked and Mugged

An elderly Fall River man was attacked and robbed Monday after buying groceries, and neighbors can't believe he was targeted.

83 year-old Manny Pereira had just bought groceries at Star Market when he was accosted on Bank Street.  He says a panhandler came up to him and asked him for a dollar, and when Manny reached into his pocket to get one, the man attacked him.  After a brief struggle the robber got away with money and other objects of value, leaving Pereira shaken up but okay.

Neighbors who know him are outraged that an elderly man with a cane could be attacked in broad daylight in their city.

Fall River Police did make an arrest in connection with the robbery; the suspect, Steven Santana, was charged with assault and battery on a person over 60.
