Elderly woman killed in Attleboro house fire

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WLNE) — An elderly woman was killed in a house fire in Attleboro early Friday morning.

Attleboro Police Chief Kyle Heagney said the fire broke out just after 1 a.m. on Division Street. As fire crews battled the flames throughout the night, Division St remained closed to traffic until reopening at approximately 9 a.m.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office identified the woman as 80-year-old Judith Henriques.

“It was a lot of flames and smoke. High flames. It was pretty hard to watch,” said Andrew, a neighbor who witnessed the fire.

The flames woke up some of the people who live on Division St. One neighbor who spoke with ABC6 News recalled the tragedy, and his and his wife’s effort to help.

“She immediately called 9-1-1 and we ran over to see if there was anything we can do,” Andrew said. “I did try to bang on the door but I didn’t hear anything inside.”

The tragic fire left those on Division St in shock. Some neighbors call the neighborhood very small and close-knit.

“[I’m just trying] to imagine what her family is thinking. Life changes so quickly and I woke up feeling grateful for what I do have,” Peters said.

Heagney said an investigation is underway by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office to determine the cause of the fire and where it started in the home.

No further information was immediately released.
