Saunderstown native Elizabeth Beisel gave up the lead during the final freestyle legs of the 400 IM to finish second behind China's Ye Shiwen in the London Olympics.
16-year old Ye Shiwen set a new world record in claiming the gold with her time of 4:28:43.
19-year old Beisel won the silver with a time of 4:31:27.
Elizabeth was 8th after the butterfly, but quickly moved into the lead after a strong backstroke and breast stroke.
However, Ye took charge in the freestyle, winning the gold. Beisel will swim a second event next Thursday when she competes in the 200-backstroke.
