Ernie Boch Jr. announces purchase of Swansea’s Pleasure Island

SWANSEA, Mass. (WLNE) — New England billionaire Ernie Boch Jr. announced on Tuesday that he’s the new owner of Pleasure Island in Swansea, and is now working on renovating the island to put it back in use.

Boch bought the 4.25 acres of land for $850,000, just before it was set to go up for auction.

“I saw it on the news. They said an island was for sale. I thought that was the coolest thing, so I made some calls and I got it,” said the newest land owner.

Boch told ABC 6 News that he plans to rename the island and give it a full makeover, which has sat untouched for about a decade.

“We’ve got the crew here cutting grass and getting rid of some of the overgrown stuff to take a look to see what it looks like and then make some decisions,” Boch said.

Boch told ABC 6 that he doesn’t plan to bring much noise to the neighborhood and wants the community’s approval of any plans.

“I’m not going to do anything without the buy-in of the town and the neighborhood. I have some ideas, so I’ll formulate my ideas. Hit the town, hit the neighbors and we’ll see if we’re on the same page,” he said.

Now, Boch said he will begin work to revamp the island, a job that will include renovations to the wooden bridge that leads onto the island, as well as fixing up a large gazebo area, multiple buildings, one with a bar inside, and lots of open grass that he says hasn’t been cut in more than a decade.

Once he finishes with all of that, he said and sees the full outlook of his newly bought private island, then he’ll figure out what to do with it.

“I don’t know yet, I don’t know. I think it’s a great opportunity,” he said. “Whatever we do will be very very quiet, very understated, and a lot of fun.”
