Escalator malfunction at MBTA’s Back Bay Station in Boston sends 9 to the hospital

BOSTON – A scary scene Sunday at MBTA’s Back Bay Station when passengers started sliding down an escalator after the steps gave out.

In all, nine people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

The incident caused train delaysm and the escalator was shut down pending an investigation.

“It’s normally steps going up, and it turned into a slide and went backwards and that’s when people fell,” Eli Smith, who witnessed the incident said. “There’s like four people laying down ina puddle of blood at the end of the escalator and people coming up holding their head.”

Trains were back on time by Sunday night.
