Fairhaven beaches closed after shark sighting
FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (WLNE) – The Fairhaven Police Department announced Saturday that the Fort Phoenix, Sconticut Neck, and West Island beaches will be closed to the public following a shark sighting.
According to authorities, the shark was spotted off Hacker Street Beach just after 1 p.m.
All beaches will be closed until further notice, as the Fairhaven Harbor Master and New Bedford Police Marine Unit are currently patrolling the area.
All beachfront and waterfront residents are instructed to remain out of the water until further notice.
Fairhaven police say that beaches are “expected to re-open Monday morning as long as there are no further shark sightings in the area.”
