The elderly man told police that he believed he was targeted and attacked because of his political beliefs and the "Trump hat" that he was wearing.
FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) – Fall River Police say they arrested a man on Tuesday after he allegedly violently targeted an 82-year-old man for his political beliefs.
According to police, Aidan Courtright, 27, of Fall River, is facing four charges:
- Civil rights violation with injury
- Assault and Battery on a person over 60
- Vandalism of personal property
- Assault and Battery with a dangerous weapon
When police arrived at the scene, the elderly man claimed that Courtright had assaulted him.
The man told police that he was standing on the grass area of the rotary near North Main Street and Airport Road holding a “Trump sign.”
The elderly man said Courtright put his car in park after seeing him and got out of his car to confront him.
“Give me the . . . sign,” Courtright said according to the elderly man.
Police say Courtright then proceeded to forcefully rip the sign out of the 82-year-old’s hands, ripped it in half, and then threw it on the ground.
Courtright then went after the elderly man grabbing him by the shirt, knocking his ‘Trump hat’ off, and then proceeded to throw the man violently to the ground, according to police.
Police say Courtright continued to assault the man by kicking the 82-year-old with his leather pointed shoes in the ribs, and legs while the elderly man was still on the ground.
After the assault, Courtright got into his car and drove off.
The 82-year-old was transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital by ambulance for evaluation. Two witnesses saw the attack and were able to confirm the victim’s version of the story, police say.
The elderly man told police that he believed he was targeted and attacked because of his political beliefs and the “Trump hat” that he was wearing.
