Fall River Man Charged with Throwing Acid at Cop

FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) – A Fall River man is facing assault and other charges after allegedly throwing a bottle of acid at a police officer.

Authorities say 52-year-old Marc Berard threw a bottle of muriatic acid at Officer Kelly Furtado at about 2 a.m. on Sunday, the day after Furtado arrested Berard's girlfriend on outstanding
warrants.

Police say the bottle smashed, releasing white vapor that burned Furtado's eyes and mouth and throat. She moved away and called for help. Berard was arrested a short time later by another officer.

He was ordered held without bail on Monday after a not guilty plea and pending a psychiatric evaluation. He is charged with possession of an infernal machine, assault on a police officer and
resisting arrest.

Muriatic acid is a powerful corrosive.
