Fall River Police investigate shooting, first violent incident there in months

What started out as a normal Monday morning at Gilbert Costa’s Pleasant Street jewelry store quickly took a turn.

“A man showed up at our door he was bleeding profusely and said he was shot and wanted us to call the ambulance. We had to apply pressure, had to stop the bleeding,” Costa said.

That helped the 23-year-old victim survive, and Costa’s surveillance video is helping police with their investigation.

“Based on the timing of events we had a vehicle of interest which is a grey Subaru that had a plate that wasn’t from Massachusetts,” said Fall River Police Sgt. J.T. Hoar.

Police tracked down the vehicle of interest Wednesday afternoon, but the driver wouldn’t stop, and a chase ensued – briefly.

“Given the time of day, it being Halloween, festivities were already kicking off…it was in the best interest for us to stop the pursuit,” said Sgt. Hoar.

The suspects ultimately ditched the car and took off, and police are on the look out.

They do know that the victim is familiar with the suspects.

“This is more about people who know each other through a certain lifestyle, either drugs or gang activity,” said Hoar.

It’s the first violent incident the city’s seen since launching a task force back in June in response to several gang-related shootings.

Police say the suspects ditched their car and ran off in the area of Slade Street. Anyone who lives in the area that may have seen something is asked to call Fall River Police.
