Fall River police hold Guns for Groceries event

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) – The Fall River Police Department held a Guns for Groceries event on Saturday.

The event went from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m. at the Blessed Trinity Parish on Plymouth Avenue.

The department provided gift certificates for groceries in return for the unwanted guns turned in.

The Guns for Groceries event was held in memory of Reverend Dr. Robert Lawrence.

According to Lawrence’s obituary, “initiated a gun buyback effort that eventually took over 3,000 guns off the streets of Fall River. He also helped to establish the Fall River Police Department’s first K-9 unit.

Lt. Jay Huard said approximately 28 guns and assorted ammo were collected on Saturday.
