Family friend of teen killed in crash on Block Island calls it huge loss

Jake Panus, just 16-years-old of Southport Connecticut was killed on Sunday in a car accident on Block Island.

BLOCK ISLAND, R.I. (WLNE) – Jake Panus, just 16-years-old of Southport Connecticut was killed on Sunday in a car accident on Block Island.

He was on vacation with his girlfriend, and the two were supposed to head back to Connecticut the day of the accident.

Panus was a passenger in a car that hit a pole, and the under-aged driver has been charged with DUI.

A family friend tells ABC 6 she hopes other young people will learn from this tragedy.

Callie Candia, a friend of the family said, “He was good looking, he did well in school, he was great in sports. When he walked into a room there was like a shining. He made you feel good about yourself. He was funny, he was charming.”

The driver faced a judge in family court on Tuesday.

Jake Panus will be laid to rest in Connecticut on Sunday.
