‘Family Guy’ Writer to Speak at RIC Commencement

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The head writer for “Family Guy” has been selected as the speaker for Rhode Island College's undergraduate commencement next month.

Daniel “Danny” Smith, who also serves as executive producer for the Fox Television show set in Rhode Island, will also receive an honorary Doctor of Letters degree at the May 19 ceremony. Smith is a 1981 graduate of Rhode Island College, where he wrote and illustrated for the student newspaper.

The speaker for the May 17 graduate commencement is Jennifer Duffy, who is senior editor of The Cook Political Report. She will receive an honorary Doctor of Social Sciences.

Others receiving honorary degrees are Leslie Yale Gutterman, senior rabbi at Temple Beth-El in Providence; Margaret Kenney, professor of mathematics at Boston College; and RIC alumna and educator-artist Regina Partridge.
