Loved ones to gather, streets blocked off for Fairhaven Marine’s funeral

By Alana Cerrone

Funeral services for U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Rodriguez are scheduled for 10:00 this morning at the First Congregational Church on Center St. in Fairhaven.

The Rodriguez family is respectfully asking that only family and close friends attend due to the building's capacity.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m., Fairhaven Police will have Center Street blocked off from Main Street to Green Street. Only funeral parking will be allowed in this area.  William Street will also be shut down from Washington Street to Center Street with the same restriction.

Anyone attending the graveside service at the National Cemetery in Bourne can take one of the six SRTA buses parked in front of the Millicent Library on Center Street. They will shuttle people for free, to and from the cemetery.

19-year-old Lance Cpl. Matthew Rodriguez was killed last week while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province.

Rodriguez was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

He enlisted in August of 2012.  His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan.

Rodriguez studied plumbing at New Bedford Vocational Technical High School, and graduated in 2012.
