The family of the Fairhaven teen killed in a car crash last week accepted her diploma at graduation Sunday. 18-year-old Meghan Sargent was an honors student and band leader. She wanted to study psychology in college.

Sargent and her 21-year-old friend Brooklyn Cody Rodrigues were killed last Monday after their car hit a tree in Mattapoisett. The crash happened just days before Sargent was set to graduate from Fairhaven High School.

The school district decided to go on with graduation as planned. Sargent’s family was invited to take the stage and receive her diploma. They were also given their daughter’s hat from her band uniform.

“I ask each of you as you think about shooting for the stars, and learning from our recent tragedy, that you do need to live for today,” said Tara Kohler, Fairhaven high principal.

Sargent’s graduating class made $250 donation to the F.H.S. memorial brick park in her memory.
