Family Safe After Providence Carjacking

A group of four people visiting from Paris, Illinois, is safe after an early morning carjacking in Providence.

Police tell ABC6 that the family had pulled into a 7-11 store on Cranston Street around 3:30 am Thursday.

One of the group, Jose Cruz, 31, went inside the store. While another male, Raul Ortiz, was pumping gas, he was approached by two suspects. One of the suspects maced Ortiz, and the two took off in the family's SUV, with a woman and a three-year-old child still inside.

Police say the woman Ana Torrens, 27, her three year old son Jeremy, were located a short time late, safe, on Dean Street near Route 10 in Providence.

Their car, a black Mercury SUV, was later recovered on North Main Street in Providence, behind the Benny's store.

Police are looking for two suspects, described as either black or Hispanic males, and have not yet made any arrests.

ABC6 Reporter Malini Basu spoke with the family about their ordeal.
