Update: Police ID victim in fatal daytime Providence shooting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – One person is dead and another injured after a shooting in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence on Friday.

Police have identified the fatal victim of the shooting as 22-year-old Devin DelaCruz.

It is believed DelaCruz was target, according to police.

Police said the shooting occurred just before noon, when two people in a car were shot near the corner of Putnam Street and Kossuth Street.

Neighbors ran out to see what happened.

“Somebody on the floor,” said Trey Paris. “Looked like he was hurt. Went over there to see if he was all right. Wasn’t doing too good.”

The other victim was brought to Rhode Island Hospital for surgery. That individual has not been identified by police. There was no immediate word on the victim’s status following surgery.

Another neighbor, a mother of young children, alarmed that this happened in the middle of the day.

“That’s really scary because sometimes I come out here and let my girls play in the driveway,” said the woman. “I see the neighbors’ kids running out on the sidewalks. What if one of them catches a stray bullet?”

She says she’s outraged about a pattern of crime in this neighborhood, putting her family at risk.

“I’ve lived here for about two years and there’s been about three shootings on this block – one of which I was outside for, and the bullets went whizzing past my head,” she said. “I live here too, I pay rent here, I’m raising my kids here. It’s not fair.”

City Council President Sabina Matos, who represents Olneyville, says she’s also concerned about how close this shooting was to a school and a daycare.

“I know it’s really worrisome when something like this happens, and happens during the day,” said Matos, a Democrat. “We are working really hard in the city of Providence to make sure that we have a neighborhood, that we have a community that is safe.”

Police are still investigating this shooting.
