Fatal stabbing inside Providence Place Mall claims 19-year-old man’s life

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) – A 19-year-old man has died following a stabbing at the Providence Place Mall Thursday morning, police said.

The incident occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. Police said it began with a fight in the food court on the mall’s third floor.

At this time, the identity of the victim has not been released.

Dan Valdez of Providence works as a manager at Charlie’s Subs in the food court and witnessed the fight break out.

“I heard this commotion, looked over my counter and there was a fight that broke out,” Valdez said. “It was five guys that looked like they were jumping two guys. So I called security, and nothing really happened at that moment, but then it moved down a ways past our sight line, and then all you could hear was screaming.”

Col. Hugh Clements of the Providence Police Department said four suspects are in custody, and police are familiar with the individuals.

Clements said the victim was known to the alleged attackers.

Police have recovered the suspected murder weapon. At this time, the incident remains under investigation, with the entire third floor of the mall blocked off to customers.

The incident marks the 11th homicide of the year in Providence.

This is a developing story and more details will be added as they become available.
