Federal Hill extends ‘Al Fresco’ dining through October

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Federal Hill Commerce Association announced Monday that they are extending ‘Al Fresco’ dining on weekends through out the month of October.

The association says they’ve applied for grants through Governor Gina Raimondo’s ‘Take it Outside’ initiative to help participating restaurants buy heaters, tents, and more tables and chairs.

“Right now with the weather going back and forth, the numbers will start to drip if we can’t make it so people can stay outdoors,” said Rick Simone, president of the Federal Hill Commerce Association.

“We need about 140 heaters just to cover [Atwells Avenue] for all the participating restaurants,” he said, “we’re in the process of trying to make that happen.”

Simone says that closing Atwells Ave and allowing restaurants to seat guests in the streets have been a huge boost to business during the pandemic.

If all goes well, he hopes to have ‘Al Fresco’ dining extend beyond October.

The usual Columbus Day weekend feast will not take place on Federal Hill this year due to Covid-19. Instead, house will be extended for ‘Al Fresco’ dining from Friday October 9 – Monday October 12.
