Feds find $1M in cash in ex-lawmaker’s safe deposit boxes
By The Associated Press
BOSTON (AP) _ U.S. marshals say they have seized more than $1 million in cash from safe deposit boxes controlled by John George, a former Dartmouth selectman and state representative.
George was sentenced in July to nearly six years in federal prison for embezzling from his taxpayer-subsidized bus company. Prosecutors said George had employees work at his farm when they were supposed to be working for the company.
He was ordered to pay more than $688,000 in restitution to the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority.
Authorities say U.S. marshals searched George’s safe deposit boxes at banks in New Bedford and Fairhaven this week and found cash tied up in rolls of $100s, $50s, and other denominations.
George stated before sentencing that his liquid assets consisted of less than $200,000.
His attorney did not immediately return a phone call.
