Fire crews rescue kayaker in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A man was rescued after his kayak flipped over in Providence early Tuesday morning.

Batallion Chief Jay Viens told an ABC 6 News crew on scene the man is an avid kayaker and was out on the water at about 2 a.m. near FishCo.

The man was able to find his phone and call 911 for himself, as well as perform a distress signal while holding onto his overturned kayak.

Viens said 911 dispatchers redirected first responders to River Street by the Narragansett Boat House on the East Side.

Fire personnel sent out special hazards with an inflatable boat to rescue him.

Viens said a call like that isn’t common in the middle of the night, and the department gets that type of call once or twice a year.
