Providence firefighters offer free New Year’s Eve rides
By Jordan Mazza
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — New Year’s Eve is a night to celebrate.
And Bayberry Beer Hall on Federal Hill is trying to do something a little different.
“We’ve created a brand new menu for the night,” said Tom Dennen, Bayberry Beer Hall owner. “And it’s just a lot of great food that you kind of just want to enjoy with a beer.”
But having too many of those drinks can put you and others at risk on the road.
That’s why, for the fifth year in a row, the Providence Fire Department is offering free rides tonight to get you home safely.
“It’s an opportunity for us to give back to the community, and give safe – and more importantly, free – rides – from Providence bars and restaurants and back to their homes in the city,” said Derek Silva of the Providence Fire Department.
Passengers won’t be traveling in a fire truck, but the off-duty Providence firefighters will be driving vans to take revelers anywhere within city limits. This year they’ve increased the number of vans to three due to growing demand. There will be two firefighters assigned to each van.
Rides will be available from 8 PM New Year’s Eve until 7 AM the next morning.
“With the fire department right here we’re definitely going to let customers know about that,” Dennan said. “Obviously very important to get home safe. Have a great time, but just be smart.”
To request a free safe ride call the department at 401-272-7999.
