UPDATE: Firefighter in serious condition after fall from roof

UPDATE: After undergoing surgery Friday, Lopes is listed in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital as of Saturday morning.

A Westport firefighter has critical injuries after slipping off an icy roof while fighting a chimney fire.

The two and a half story house caught fire around 8 p.m. Thursday evening. During the fire, two firefighters went atop the roof to extinguish the fire in the chimney. While on the roof, 47-year-old Steven Lopes a 7-year veteran of the Westport Fire Department slipped on ice and fell nearly thirty feet.

Robert Manchester, 41, also slipped in his attempts to stop Lopes from falling. Manchester fell approximately ten feet. He was treated at Charlton Memorial Hospital and released.

Lopes was brought to Rhode Island Hospital where he remains in critical condition with traumatic injuries.

Tiverton Fire Department assisted Westport Fire Department with the hospital transports.

Lopes is a well-known member of the community who is involved in a comedy troupe know as the Portuguese Firemen.
