Fire forces family, including 4 children, from New Bedford home

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — A fire in New Bedford forced a family from their home Thursday night.

The fire happened just before 10 p.m. on Mate Drive.

The New Bedford Fire Department said the home’s garage was on fire and spread to the attached two-story home. Three cars and a motorcycle also caught fire.

“The fuel tank on at least one of vehicles became compromised and began leaking gasoline which ignited,” said the fire department in a social media post. “Crews initiated a foam operation to extinguish the fire and prevent reignition.”

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters said two adults and four children were displaced. The American Red Cross assisted the family.

No further information was immediately released.
