Firefighters respond to calls about explosions in Swansea

SWANSEA, Mass. (WLNE) — A multi-family house caught fire on Houlton Street on Friday afternoon.

Neighbors said they called 911 after hearing two loud explosions.

The Swansea Fire Chief Eric Hader said when firefighters arrived the fire extended out the back of the home and up to the attic below a group of solar panels.

All occupants had been evacuated by a neighbor before the firefighters arrived, and a cat was also rescued, he added.

There were no injuries that resulted from the fire but the home is likely a total loss.

The explosion was likely caused by propane tanks located on the back porch, though these are not suspected to be the cause of the fire itself.

The Red Cross is working to relocate the family that was displaced.

Mutual aid was given by the Somerset Fire Department. The Warren and Rehoboth departments gave station coverage.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
