BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE)- The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) announced the first case of the B.1.351 COVID-19 variant in the state on Tuesday.

According to the DPH, the woman who contracted the variant lives in Middlesex County and is in her 20’s. The DPH says that she hasn’t traveled at all.

The case was confirmed by the Broad Institute after some genetic sequencing.

The DPH says that the B.1.351 variant spreads easily and the state will be doing everything that they can to quickly identify variants of concern.

The Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory is teaming up with many healthcare and academic partners around the state to do so.
