First non-binary clothing store opens in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – New Bedford’s first non-binary clothing store, Hewn, opened on Purchase Street two weeks.

Clothes at Hewn are not organized by size or gender, but instead by types of clothing.

“We have a few different racks. It’s organized by bottoms, tops, and outwear,” said owner Myles Goulart. “Everyone’s welcome to look at everything and pick out something that they want.”

Goulart wanted the store to reflect his own closet.

“Whenever I go shopping and look for clothing it’s hard to find men’s shoes that fit me, or men’s pants that fit me. So, my closet became a collection of women’s clothing and men’s clothing,” said Goulart.

He opened the boutique with his fiance, Andrew Romano.

“Being two drastically different body sizes, we have a hard time shopping in regular clothing stores. We don’t want that experience here,” said Romano.

Instead, they hope everyone who comes to Hewn feels welcomed, regardless of their body type or gender.

“We just want anyone to come in, look around, make friends, laugh,” said Romano.

Goulart plans to expand his inventory to selling art, and eventually wants to host open mic nights at the store.
