First Rhode Island recreational marijuana sale made in Warwick

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The first legal sale of recreational marijuana in Rhode Island happened bright and early Thursday morning.

Christopher Hampton made that purchase at RISE in Warwick, which opened to customers at 5:45 a.m. after a ribbon cutting.

“I am excited. I just feel like it’s something I can brag about,” Hampton said. “Call back to California and be like, ‘Yo guys, check this out.'”

As of noontime Thursday, RISE employees estimated about 200 customers had visited the dispensary since 6 a.m. to purchase adult-use marijuana. Because of the high number of customers, they expected to visit the dispensary, the business rented a shuttle to take customers to and from an adjacent parking lot to try to limit the amount of traffic along Jefferson Boulevard.

RISE is one of five locations starting the sale of adult-use recreational marijuana, now allowed by state law.

The other four locations are Aura in Central Falls, Mother Earth Wellness in Pawtucket, Greenleaf Compassion Center in Portsmouth, and the Slater Center in Providence.

“Not a lot is different from yesterday to today. The products are the same and the dosing is the same,” said Anthony Georgiadis, the Chief Financial Officer at Green Thumb Industries, associated with RISE. “We’re really able to hit the ground running, serving consumers tested, regulated products that we’ve previously been selling through the medical channel.”
