The University of Rhode Island named Jim Fleming as its new head football coach.

The defensive coordinator from the University of Central Florida was formally introduced at a press conference on campus on Monday morning.

Fleming spent two seasons at Central Florida, first as linebackers coach and then defensive coordinator. The Knights have an 11-1 record overall and are ranked No. 15. They will play against No. 6 Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl.

He says belief is critical for success and that the team will be energetic, hard-working and physical.

The New York City native succeeds Joe Trainer, who was released from the final year of his contract in November. Trainer went 12-44 as URI's head coach.
