PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A former attorney has been sentenced on embezzlement charges, the Attorney General’s office announced Friday.

Vincent Mitchell, 58, of Coventry pleaded no contest Thursday to one count of Embezzlement over $100 and was sentenced to 20 years with 8 to serve at the ACI.

Prosecutors said Mitchell embezzled over $1.3 million from 11 clients of his estate planning practice, many of them older adults, through a Ponzi scheme.

Mitchell reportedly used the funds to cover his own personal practice’s losses stemming from his drug, alcohol and gambling habits.

In addition to the prison time, Mitchell was also ordered to pay $1,302,232.75 in restitution.
