Former head of PERA sues City of Providence for wrongful termination

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- The former Executive Director of the Providence External Review Authority is suing the City of Providence after he was terminated last November.

Jose Batista was fired after he released a video showing Providence Police Sgt. Joseph Hanley allegedly assaulting Rishod Gore during an arrest for disorderly conduct.

The incident happened in April 2020.

Batista claimed PERA and the City violated his first amendment rights when they fired him for releasing the footage. The former Executive Director claimed the City was trying to silence him and keep him from revealing the truth about the Hanley incident.

A judge found Hanley guilty of using excessive force last week.

Hanley intends to appeal the decision.
